Nissa Carrington
HHV Portraits show members of our community dressed and styled by themselves to show their true character. From leather footwear to sneakers and slip-ons, hoodies to mohair and parkas, our community is dressed to impress. Working in fashion, finance or freelancing, we will highlight different individuals monthly and share the versatility our community has through their thoughts and feelings about where they are, what they are wearing, and much more…
Who are you, where are you from, what do you do – and what do you do when you’re not doing that?
My name is Nissa Carrington, I was raised in a very small town called Grafenwöhr and just moved to Berlin last summer after stops in Paris, Würzburg & Hamburg.
I am a DJ and freelance Art Director.
Making your passion(s) your job is always a bit tricky because I feel like I have no hobbies left. But if I‘m not on the road, on the computer or digging for music, you’ll probably find me either looking for interior inspo on Pinterest, hanging with friends or on the couch binging The Real Housewives.
What inspires you to be yourself and dress the way you do? Are there people, music, or places that influence you?
I think one the one hand I am deeply influenced by African American culture & music itself, I find a lot of power & courage in that part of my identity. I also love wearing vintage finds from my mom’s closet, who spent some time in California in the early 80s, I have a few sick t-shirts from that time that I wear all the time.
I think the chicest people on earth are Paloma Elsesser and Solange Knowles. A designer I love is Martine Rose. Stylists whose work I admire are Gabriella Karefa-Johnson, Julio Cesar Delgado, Leah Abbott, Theresa Gross, Carlos Nazario,.. so many.
Sneakers, boots, or ballet flats? What do you prefer to wear and why? Is there an accessory you can’t go without?
Honestly, I am a mules girlie. I hate tying my shoes. But if I had to choose one of the above, it would be sneakers.
I guess an accessory I can’t live without are my rings, which are a collection of family heirlooms, gifts and weird lil pieces of art. I panic every time I accidentally leave the house without them.
Which Berlin district represents your style best and why? Can you recommend any cafés or restaurants in Berlin? Where do you like to go when you need to unwind or get creative?
Hard to decide, as my style oscillates between monochrome fits with a nice purse and bad bitch boots and combos Adam Sandler would wear on his day off.
I love the cheesecake brownie at Café Engels. Humble Pie makes amazing fried chicken. I always leave Knödelwirtschaft happier than I came in. I love a 5 course meal and a spicy margarita from Burro Unchained.
What’s next? If you had to predict a trend for the next few years, what would it be?
I guess judging from history, the 2010s are up next to hit the mainstream?
I am scared already.
