Wala

HHV Portraits show members of our community dressed and styled by themselves to show their true character. From leather footwear to sneakers and slip-ons, hoodies to mohair and parkas, our community is dressed to impress. Working in fashion, finance or freelancing, we will highlight different individuals monthly and share the versatility our community has through their thoughts and feelings about where they are, what they are wearing, and much more…

Who are you, where are you from, what do you do and what do you do when you are not doing that?

I am Wala, and the question of where I’m from is a bit tricky. I was born in Syria, grew up in Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia, and I’ve been living in Berlin for over eight years now.
Professionally, I’m a project manager at the amazing talent and communications agency 0360WORKS. At the agency, I oversee various strong-character creators and work with my bosses on exciting projects and creative concepts for our clients.
When I’m not working, I love being creative—whether it’s crocheting, painting, or trying out new recipes for cooking and baking. I also enjoy yoga or Pilates to keep the physical aspect in balance. On top of that, I love learning new things and constantly challenging myself to broaden my horizons.

What inspires you to be you and dress as you do? Are there people, music/musicians, or specific places that influence you?

I’ve always been inspired by film, anime, and music when it comes to my clothing. I’m not someone who follows a specific role model; instead, I found my own style by experimenting with different looks over time. I’m interested in history and culture and find it fascinating how certain accessories and styles have made their way into fashion. I wouldn’t say I have a fixed style, but I can definitely say that my outfits are always a reflection of myself. Fashion is just fun for me! 🙂

Sneakers, boots, or ballet flats? What do you prefer to wear and why? Is there an accessory you can’t go without?

Definitely boots! There are so many cool variations—but I never want to give up my cowboy boots again! It’s simply an amazing craft. For example, slightly edgy, rock-inspired boots always bring back a nostalgic sense of teenage rebellion for me. Aside from boots, I have to admit that I have a little skater-girl heart and still love wearing my VANS slip-ons.
When it comes to accessories, my jewelry is essential. I have pieces that I never take off because they hold deep emotional value for me—like my necklace with the word “Mother” in Arabic. It was made by my aunt after my grandmother passed away, using gold that was passed down to us. She gifted each of the women in our family a necklace like this, so we could always carry a part of her with us.

Which Berlin district represents your style best and why? Can you recommend any cafés or restaurants in Berlin? Where do you like to go when you need to unwind or get creative?

Phew, that’s a tough question. I’d say in winter, Prenzlauer Berg and Mitte represent my style best—that’s when I’m always bundled up and dressed for functionality. 😀 In spring, summer, and fall, I’d say Neukölln, Kreuzberg, Prenzlauer Berg, and Mitte—a mix of everything, for sure.
Cafés: In Prenzlauer Berg, there’s Bronco, which has amazing pastries. Once the weather warms up, it’s the perfect place to unwind, read a book, or crochet.
Restaurants: There are so many great places on my list, but my go-to is a Vietnamese restaurant called House of Do An. I haven’t eaten meat in over 12 years, so I can definitely share some great vegetarian recommendations.

What’s next? If you had to predict a trend for the next few years, what would it be?

That’s hard to say since I don’t really follow trends. But I think we’re seeing a return to classic elements, especially for women (maybe also for men). Layering tops could be an interesting twist this year, with different colors, fabrics, and silhouettes being combined. Baggy pants are becoming less popular, making way for more form-fitting styles—both for pants and tops.
