Carhartt WIP presents
RELEVANT PARTIES
Mahogani Music
The latest episode of Carhartt WIP’s RELEVANT PARTIES podcast series takes us to Detroit. We get to dive deep into the musical history of Motor City, as we take a closer look at the origins and impact of Mahogani Music, the label founded by DJ and producer Kenny Dixon Jr., a.k.a. Moodymann.
Mahogani Music has enriched Detroit’s musical lanscape with expressive sounds from various genres, house, hip hop, jazz, funk, soul and artists like Amp Fiddler, Celebtrity BBQ Sauce Band, Dez Andres, Rick Whilhite, J Dilla and of course Moodymann. As an epicentre of dance music culture, Detroit and Mahogani Music have both had a huge impact on the global scene for many years.
RELEVANT PARTIES host Chal Ravens speaks to Traci Washington and Florence J. Leigh, the women who keep Mahogani Music running from their respective bases in Detroit and Vienna, Austria, and we get some insights on their roles, the creative work with various artists and the unique artistry of the label’s founder.
This is the last episode of this season of Carhartt WIP RELEVANT PARTIES, the series will return in Fall/Winter 2021 with a new format, this time focusing on cities that have impacted our musical landscpade and the subcultures that underpin them. So stay tuned.
