From Mount Fuji With Love
I climbed Mt. Fuji and
As my legs trembled
On its peak
This poem by Masaoka Shiki (1867-1902), one of the founding fathers of Japanese haiku poetry, tells of the blissful moment of spiritual awakening at the summit of Mount Fuji. Japan’s highest mountain is actually a volcano and has been officially inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2013 for its importance as a »sacred place and source of artistic inspiration«. Not only the perfect symmetry of the volcano, but also the mysticism that has surrounded it for many centuries has fascinated people all around the world, making it an icon of Japan. The famous sunrise, seen from the peak of Mount Fuji, has been the subject of countless pieces of art, and the Japanese language even has a word for this magical event: »Goraiko« – literally translated as »the coming of the light«.
Before we get lost on a detour of musings about this mystical volcano’s magic, let’s get back to the matter at hand: Edwin, Japanese pioneer of the denim world and inventor of the stone wash technique, has not only made denim big in Japan, but has also helped to make Japanese denim the most sought-after and high-quality denim fabric of all time. However, Edwin can do more than denim: For many years now, the brand has proven its expertise in creating fascinating designs, utilizing exquisite workmanship on high-quality materials and bringing exciting collabs to life.
The hype around the famous Rainbow Selvedge Denim has recently been followed by the hype about Edwin’s Graphic Tees, the most famous of which is the »From MT Fuji« T-shirt with a back print of the nostalgic image of Mount Fuji. The illustration is based on traditional souvenir motives and is a loving homage to Japan’s landmark.
