Who are you, where are you from, what do you do – and what do you do when you’re not working?
My name is Sergio Ben Mario. I grew up in Lübeck, a small city in the north of Germany, and I’m now based in Berlin.
I’m an artist working across painting, video, photography, and mixed media. My work is strongly influenced by my experiences, everyday life, and the international skate community I grew up around.
It’s hard to say what I do when I’m not working – as an artist, you’re basically working every day. It’s an everyday hustle.
What inspires you to be completely yourself and to dress the way you do?
I think what inspires me most is simply doing whatever I feel like doing. I don’t really like following rules, and I think that reflects both in my art and the way I dress.
Sneakers, boots, or runners – what do you prefer to wear and why?
It changes every day. I don’t really have one specific shoe style.
One thing I never leave the house without is my medium-sized bag – with my point-and-shoot camera, headphones, and glasses. Basically everything I might need.
Which Berlin neighborhood best matches your style?
Definitely Moabit. Crazy underrated, surrounded by water, lots of parks, relaxed people. I love it.
You’ll usually find me at a flea market somewhere in the west of Berlin. If not, I’m probably at my studio – or not in town.
What’s next for you?
Everyone knows Berlin is dark and grey for most of the year, so I think people are going to fall in love with color and playfulness again – stripes, dots, stars, all of that.
What’s next for me? Big things are planned. Keep your eyes open.
